![]() ![]() The Coron retails for $450 USD, and you can expect a MIPS version sometime down the road. There's also a new breakaway visor design that, as the description suggests, allows the visor to move out of the way rather than snapping into pieces when you scorpion into the ground. Even though the RECCO Reflector and NFC tech isn’t terribly useful in the UK yet, that doesn’t mean that the POC Kortal Race Mips is a bad helmet. According to POC, the Coron is able to better withstand more day to day abuse than the Cortex without losing its ability to protect your head due to the new shell, but also thanks to the multi-impact EPP liner that's found inside. There are plenty of helmets cheaper than the Kortal Race Mips but few match its top build quality and design that combines all of those useful features, as well as the safety tech. The ultimate POC Obex comparison Intro to the Obex. Cutting edge protection, turbo-charged airflow and cool Scandinavian design make it a trail-slaying winner. The POC Tectal MTB Helmet has been designed to meet the demands of aggressive trail and enduro mountain bikers. In this article, we’ll explore the updated version of the Obex Backcountry (BC) helmet from POC. Choose the options above to narrow the price. POC says that M-Forge has previously only been used in the motorsports world, and that the new shell is able to flex and absorb more impact energy than a more traditional shell, all while still being light and durable. This season POC is pulling out all the stops in order to make the safest backcountry helmet possible. It features the same understated styling as Cortex, but is said to be even safer due to the M-Forge shell material that greatly ups the helmet's multi-impact performance compared to its predecessor. Those looking for more protection than the Tectal might be stoked to see the Coron, a completely new fullface helmet from POC. The lack of a magnetic buckle and the poor sweat management is a shame but these are small issues on an otherwise excellent helmet.Simple and understated, as is the norm for POC. The extra protection on offer is confidence inspiring and, combined with the aramid layer and Mips, does a great job of keeping the rider safe. The Tectal Race helmet is a very comfortable and lightweight helmet that provides exceptional coverage. The Cascade makes use of this but isn’t without its issues. Kali uses different-density materials in their construction to protect against low-speed and high-speed crashes. If you’re looking for high levels of protection, the Kali Cascade is worth a look. At this high end of the market, another option to consider would be the classic Troy Lee Designs A3 which Liam reviewed. The A3 is the same price, is also impressively comfortable and the pads manage to deal with sweat better. However, the tech and protection on offer do go someway to justifying the expense. Retailing at £200, this is by no means a cheap helmet. This means the search and rescue teams that use this system are usually found near ski resorts, great if you’re riding chairlifts in the Alps or up in Scotland but for most UK riding the RECCO system won’t help. Although it is used for search and rescue, it is predominately used in the ski world. When riding with glasses there were no fitment issues. Integrated RECCO reflector uses radar so you can be quickly located and helped if you get injured Used and trusted by rescue services around the world. If you plan to go full enduro with goggles I recommend trying the fit before you buy. A trail-dedicated helmet for everything from freeride to enduro Features more coverage at the temples and back of head, adjustable visor and goggle clip. With the POC Tectal, I did find there wasn’t quite enough room for them which pushed the goggles further down my face than was comfortable. On the topic of goggles, I tested the fit with some 100% goggles which I’ve used on countless other helmets. The goggle clip feature on the back of the helmet does a great job at retaining the goggle strap but, if I’m being honest, it felt a little unnecessary - especially when I need to unfasten it each time I want to turn the goggles 180 for carrying or remove them entirely. I must say the quality of this helmet is second to none, the construction feels very well put together which is reassuring considering the job at hand. The feeling of the helmet wrapping around your head does give the impression you’re well protected. On the plus side, the extra coverage is confidence-inspiring while riding. This resulted in eyebrows full of sweat and inevitably dripping onto the inside of my riding glasses during descents. This was only on the hottest summer days, not an issue for most UK riding. The minimal padding is not effective when it comes to moisture wicking. Due to the high coverage on offer, it gets a little warm, particularly on slow-speed climbs. The wind tunnel-developed ventilation wasn’t as effective as I’d hoped, I wouldn’t call this helmet airy.
